A DxE investigation at one of Trader Joe’s biggest suppliers found hens trapped in massive manure pits, starving to death, and forced to eat their own feces. Ask the Trader Joe’s CEO to stand by the company’s values by cutting ties with suppliers that force birds to live in their own filth.

The “Certified Humane” supplier to Trader Joe’s guarantees “resting areas, sufficient space and the ability to engage in natural behaviors.” But DxE activists found a rotting wasteland festering with disease and shocking cruelty.
Filth
DxE uncovered hens trapped in massive manure pits festering with flies and feces.
Starvation
Hens were forced to feed on their own waste as they languish inside of these massive manure pits with no access to food or water.
Death
Even at ‘humane’ farms, DxE found dead hens who had likely starved to death.

Brutality and filth are the norm for the egg industry, which produces tens of millions of pounds of manure every year and can lead to salmonella outbreaks and massive recalls. Lucy was trapped inside of a manure pit, unable to eat or drink, until DxE found her.

When DxE found Lucy, she was trapped in a manure pit. Day after day, the feces from birds in cages would drop in, covering Lucy in feces. In their natural habitat, chickens like to keep themselves clean. Lucy had no choice but to be drowned in feces around her.

Lucy had no access to food or water and was forced to feed on the feces she was surrounded by.
ESCAPING
FROM HELL
DxE found Lucy and rushed her to a vet so she could be treated for dehydration and severe malnutrition. Now, Lucy does not have to resort to eating feces. She can also stretch her wings and keep herself clean.
